Capacity building of fish farmers through NFDB funded training at Kolkata: An ATARI-NFDB joint approach

In ushering the convergence between ICAR and NFDB, a Workshop on NFDB Funded Fishery projects was organized by ICAR-ATARI, Kolkata on 8th June, 2016 with an objective of finalization of the projects submitted by KVKs of Zone II having Fishery experts in order to build the required capacity and skill of fish farmers for entrepreneurship development in Fishery sector in Eastern India. While welcoming the delegates, Dr. S. K. Roy, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Kolkata suggested the KVKs to follow NFDB norms and guidelines for submission of training proposals and advised for proper beneficiary selection for the programme. Sh. R. Suresh, Senior Consultant and In-Charge, HRDof NFDB, while speaking on the occasion, explained the modus operandi of the capacity building programme and stressed upon the committed and concerted approach by both ATARI and NFDB in improvement of livelihood of the Fisherman in this part of the country where production and consumption disparity of fish is conducive for remunerative market opportunities. He emphasized the need of problem-based, district-specific training module to be devised by the KVKs for successful implementation of the programme. Appreciating the role of NFDB in organizing such impressive programme, Dr. S. Biswas, Director of Research, Farm and Extension of West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Science, Kolkata, West Bengal stressed upon the practice of scientific fish culture by the farmers and the similar social status of the Fishery Professionals as other technical personnel. Dr. R. K. Sohane, Director of Extension Education of Bihar Agricultural University,Sabour, Bihar spoke about the development of budget prototype for such training modules. The proposals presented by 22 individual KVKs were finalized through detailed discussion during the workshop. The Programme Coordinators, Subject Matter Specialists (Fishery), Fishery experts and Scientists of ICAR-ATARI, Kolkata were also present. The meeting ended with the vote of thanks to the Chair.
